Coalescence of bubbles and droplets is one of the unsolved problems during the design procedure of multiphase apparatuses, such as absorption or extraction columns. To overcome the uncertainties behind coalescence, an innovative method for the investigation of coalescence events in a continuous small-scale system is presented that allows the rapid generation of crucial data and at the same time a generation of a database for coalescence times of different systems. In a microfluidic Y-junction, two synchronous bubble streams are combined, and the contact time before coalescence is detected. The evaluation of air bubble coalescence events in different aqueous salt and alcohol solutions shows satisfying results with high sensitivity and linearity.
