This study explores the use of membrane distillation crystallization (MDC) for processing highly concentrated salt solutions produced by desalination plants and industrial wastewater. MDC integrates membrane distillation and crystallization into a single process, reducing capital and operating costs and improving sustainability. The study focuses on applying seeding techniques and fractional crystallization to concentrate a synthetic FLUWA wastewater stream at pilot-scale. The effects of salt crystallization and seeding on membrane performance and the possibility of fractional crystallization were investigated under different operating conditions. The results show that the process is capable of recovering 99% of water and total salt in continuous operation, while also separating the salts into three fractions. This presents an opportunity for testing future process technologies for industrial use, such as fraction recovery of salt components in multiple salt solutions from saline wastewaters.
