We provide a behavioral explanation for the observed trade-off in strategic decision making between product and process innovation and their degree of radicalness. Especially we propose the availability bias to work differently for product innovation than for process innovation, favoring radical innovation for the first, leaving only incremental degrees of process innovation. We argue that this effect is prevalent only under high degrees of environmental dynamism. We test derived hypotheses in a sample of 100 Austrian firms, supporting especially the proposed trade-offs between product and process innovation and their interaction with environmental dynamism. Finally, we describe managerial implications and discuss contributions to various streams of research.
