In this talk we will first discuss issues of non-normality and short and long-term behaviour of linear deterministic systems. We then report on new results concerning the interaction of non-normality and certain stochastic perturbations of linear systems with respect to their mean-square dynamics, and present examples of applications in fluid dynamics, ecology and system control.
