As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of verbal, this presentation takes stock of the contribution that the study of English as a lingua franca (ELF) has made to applied linguistics over the past three decades, both in Austria and internationally. Bringing together emerging and more established Austrian ELF scholars, our talk outlines why Austria holds a special place in the history of ELF research.
The Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE) (VOICE 2021), the first general corpus of ELF interactions worldwide, was developed at the University of Vienna and has since become an international cornerstone for empirical research in this field. The creation and analysis of such corpora have led to a wealth of descriptive studies, pointing out the characteristics of ELF use and offering valuable insights with wide-ranging implications for applied linguistic concerns. Current key areas in ELF research range from transcultural communication via ELF in many high-stakes encounters such as migration and asylum seeking, peace-keeping and diplomacy, language (education) policy and language planning, testing, international publishing, the use of ELF as a medium of instruction, the pragmatic strategies ELF speakers employ, to the occurrence of multilingual elements and ways towards adopting an ELF perspective in English language teaching.
ELF research is thus of great relevance to many areas of work undertaken under the auspices of verbal. This workshop provides an opportunity to review the findings that have emerged from ELF studies and to discuss the future directions of this dynamic, applied linguistic field. As we look ahead, we will explore the potential for further research and the continued relevance of ELF in an increasingly globalized world.
