Original Kurzfassung:
Electro-active materials are widely used as structurally integrated materials to put smart structures into practice. Typically finite deformations and large electric fields occur, such that nonlinear and electro-mechanically coupled formulations are required and efficient numerical schemes for these types of problems are needed.
The first part of the lecture will focus on phenomenological approaches for the nonlinear modeling of different types of electro-mechanical coupling in electro-active materials such as coupling by means of electrostatic forces and ponderomotive forces, and constitutive coupling through effects like reversible piezoelectricity and electrostriction as well as irreversible ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity. Promi- nent examples for such materials are e.g. piezoelectric ceramics, dielectric elastomers, electrostrictive polymers and ferroelectric materials. In the second part of the lecture thin structures with integrated electro-active materials are studied. In these problems a three-dimensional approach is often ineffi- cient and mostly not necessary. Classical theories of structural mechanics and their extension with respect to the effect of the structurally integrated electro-active materials will be discussed. Again, the focus will be on consistently incorporating electrostatic and ponderomotive forces as well as on properly accounting for constitutive coupling ranging from reversible piezoelectricity to ferroelectricity.
The lecture will also address the efficient numerical simulation of electro-active materials and struc- tures. In particular, we will briefly discuss electro-mechanically coupled mixed Finite Elements and present solutions for some representative examples.
