Original Kurzfassung:
The circular economy is considered the most important vision for integrating economic prosperity with sustainable development. In contrast to the prevailing efficiency approach focused on incrementally reducing a product's material and energy use, the circular economy is about continuous cycling of products, components, and materials through maintenance, repair, reuse, refurbishing/remanufacturing, and recycling. Thereby the circular economy combines strategies for extending product lifetimes ("slowing") with material circulation ("closing"). Electronic products are a particular challenge for circularity, given that product designs increasingly lack reparability, and the breadth of materials used hamper recycling. Based on 10 years of research rooted in the cross-sector Innovation Network Aiming at Sustainable Smartphones (INAS), I will report on challenges and best-practices with regard to cross-value cycle collaboration for implementing more circular product designs, managing reverse cycles (e.g., take-back), and driving new business models.
