Revitalization for the common good? Alternative union organizing in the field of live-in care in Austria

Unions are grappling with issues of legitimacy and a decline in membership. This paper examines how
trade unions can use technology as part of their revitalization strategy, using the example of a common
good-oriented platform in the Austrian live-in care sector. Based on a single case research design, the
study highlights core activities such as community building, stakeholder management, and business
model development that were part of the union?s revitalization strategy. These activities were employed
to mobilizing different power resources. The study demonstrates how improvisation and experimentation
bolstered associational power, while media campaigns and collaborations strengthened societal and
institutional power. The study shows how technology can sustain union influence, provides insights for
unions globally to adapt to contemporary challenges and thus contributes to the union revitalization
discourse.
