Original Kurzfassung:
Fluid flow is present in many industrial applications, particularly in the (bio)chemical, metallurgical, and petroleum industries. A special class of fluid flow occurs when two or more substances stream simultaneously in a pipe or vessel, which is referred to as multiphase flow. Monitoring single or multiphase flow is necessary to ensure the safety and efficiency of industrial processes and equipment. As a result, a number of sensors and instrumentation have been developed and applied in the past to monitor fluid flow. Electrical impedance measurement techniques, which measure variations in electrical properties such as resistance or capacitance caused by the measurand, have been successfully applied to measure flow parameters, especially in multiphase mixtures. This presentation provides an overview of selected impedance measurement techniques used to monitor single and multiphase flows, including multidimensional approaches. The term 'dimension' refers not only to the classic spatial dimension, but also to the excitation energy (spectral dimension) and the temporal resolution required to monitor fast phenomena (temporal dimension). Therefore, different sensor, instrumentation and data processing technologies as well as some applications are presented. Hence, the talk will describe and discuss some impedance measurement techniques, ranging from simple impedance probes to tomographic (multi-electrode) techniques, as well as impedance spectroscopy. Additionally, current trends for further development and optimization of this versatile measurement technique will be explored.
