Multiphase flow is frequently encountered in various industrial applications, including nuclear, chemical, and petroleum industries. Monitoring such flows is necessary in field applications to ensure the safety and efficiency of industrial processes and equipment. Additionally, research facilities require multiphase flow experiments with multi-dimensional and non- or minimal invasive sensors to visualize flows and generate accurate data, which supports the development and validation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow models. For this reason, in the past, several sensors and instruments have been developed and applied to monitor multiphase flow. Electrical impedance techniques, which measure the variation of an electrical property such as resistance or capacitance caused by the measurand, have been applied to imaging flow in multiphase mixtures. Starting with the general methods of electromagnetic tomographic imaging, this presentation will concentrate on wire-mesh sensors (WMS). These sensors represent a hybrid solution between tomographic flow imaging and intrusive probes and have been extensively used to investigate various types of multiphase flow, primarily in gas-liquid flows. WMS can produce cross-sectional images of phase distribution at high temporal and spatial resolution. Advanced data processing is usually applied to extract derived flow parameters. The operating principles of WMS flow imaging, including conductance, capacitance, and dual modes will be covered. It also presents some applications of WMS in pipe flow imaging and discusses variations on the original geometry/principle, as well as current trends for further development and optimization of this versatile measurement technique.
