Working principles of electric machines have been discovered and investigated for around 200 years. Electric machines are rumored to be well-known and technological advances can only be made by improving the associated power electronics and control techniques. To quash the rumors, this talk highlights recent achievements in electric machine research. It includes new energy conversion principles, new horizons in depth and scope of electric machines analyses, and benefits arising from emerging manufacturing technologies and modern modeling and optimization techniques. The impact of current societal challenges on the development of new electric machine topologies and operating principles is further highlighted. Today?s pioneering developments usher in a new era of more efficient, power dense, robust, and sustainable electric machines.
