Original Kurzfassung:
Neoliberalism is a contested category in the social sciences and in politics. As adoctrine, it advocates for free markets, deregulation, privatization and minimal state intervention. Neoliberal policies have been widely adopted in Latin America since the 1980s, but how do they spread across the region? Scholarship tended to explain the ?import? of this set of ideas and practices through two narratives. One emphasizes the role of external actors from the United States and Europe such a seconomists, business people, international organizations and governments in diffusing and imposing neoliberal ideas. The other narrative focuses on dynamics within each country like the implementation and outcomes of neoliberal reforms, the alliances and conflicts among local actors, and the resistance and alternatives to neoliberalism. Current research indicates that neoliberal resilience depends on transnational networks of innovative actors such as think tanks and social movements to consolidate and adapt over time.
This conference brings together specialist researchers to explore the entanglements between the local and transnational dimensions of neoliberalism in Latin America. If we can talk of a phenomenon such as ?peripheral neoliberalism?, what are its specific characteristics? We will discuss current projects that examine different aspects of the circulation of neoliberal political strategy and right-wing subject construction. The event provides the opportunity to share analytical insights and challenges and to foster the growth of a collaborative research network.
