Impurities, vacancies, addatoms, domain boundaries and other imperfections can significantly impact structural, electronic magnetic, and transport properties of solids. Topological insulators are not the exception, although electronic spin transport on their surfaces is supposed to be protected by time-reversal symmetry. Nevertheless, imperfections, which can be natural or which can arise by sample fabrication, can modify underline bulk properties and therewith desired topological effects. Therewith, first-principles simulations can gain a deep inside knowledge of the physics behind. In my talk I?ll present our experience in this research field made over the last decade. Various types of defects, non-magnetic and magnetic, which can arise in topological insulators, will be discussed in this context. The main focus will be devoted to topological properties of alloys, electronic, magnetic structures and band gap formation in topological insulators with magnetic and non-magnetic impurities, edge states at domain boundaries in antiferromagnetic topological insulators.
