Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) basis for electro-mobility. The growing demand for secondary batteries poses a dramatic challenge to global society. On the one hand, this results from the insufficient extraction of primary raw materials cobalt, nickel, and lithium. On the other hand, spent LIBs pose a serious environmental hazard in the case of landfills. Both aspects require improved recycling strategies of lithium-ion batteries.
This study presents the successful recycling of the so-called "black material", which consists of the active materials of spent LIBs (Co, Li, Mn, Ni). For this purpose, the black material is leached in a sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide solution, and the metal ions present are separated by reactive solvent extraction. An equilibrium study is carried out to determine a suitable ion exchanger, a general process design, and estimate optimal process conditions (Keller et al. 2021a). The continuous process is afterward studied in a pulsed disc and doughnut column (Keller et al. 2021b). Finally, the reactive mass transfer is investigated using a membrane-based micro-reactor (Keller et al. 2022).
