Original Kurzfassung:
The reduction of iron ore plays a key role in the iron- and steel-making industry. However, harsh conditions render industrial plants mostly inaccessible to experimental research and the vast amount of particles makes it a challenging task for computer simulations. In the present work, we are using a multi-level coarse-grain (MLCG) model that improves the feasibility of large-scale DEM simulations in such cases. Furthermore, to depict the direct reduction of iron ore, we extend the existing MLCG approach to consider chemical processes using an unreacted shrinking core model (USCM). We demonstrate the applicability of this model set by studying the discharge of particles from a simple rectangular bin on a laboratory scale.
