Several studies show, that incumbent firms are rather reluctant when it comes to engaging in Business Model Innovation. This is often explained by economic and cognitive path dependency and strong organizational inertia to change. One way to manage this is to conduct the innovation process as independently as possible from the existing organization. In this study, we analyze such an independent innovation process that is carried out together with a special external partner - called company builder. Company builders work on new, disruptive ideas or business models very independently of the existing organization - only in collaboration with a corporate project team. Nevertheless, a certain amount of attention from other stakeholders in the company is required during the various phases of the innovation process. This study shows in which phases of the innovation process the attention of which internal stakeholders is (more or less) required and thus provides important inputs for the successful planning and implementation of such innovation processes in incumbent firms.
