Numerical simulations of the flow around an unswept and untwisted rectangular wing with rounded tip and an aspect ratio of 6 are carried out at a Reynolds Number of 171000 for a moderate and a high geometric angle of attack (4° and 10°) using the finite-volume based CFD-package FLUENT. A high-lift wing profile with gentle stall characteristic is chosen for this purpose. A multiblock mesh of about five million hexahedral cells and 400 grid points along the profile contour is used. Besides lift and drag prediction one major goal of these simulations is to analyse the formation of the trailing edge vortices. To account for the anisotropic turbulence structure of these vortices a Reynolds-Stress-Turbulence model is applied.
Results are compared to those gained using the Spalart-Allmaras-model, PIV-measurements and lifting line theory. Conclusions are drawn to improve future CFD-simulation results.
