The mechanical characterisation of pre-damaged structural components made from sheet moulding compound (SMC) carbon-fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) is presented. A cyclic test is
followed by a quasi-static tensile test to estimate the residual strength of the component. Visual assessment of a highly stressed area is performed via 3D-DIC for the static and dynamic tests. As a result from the load and displacement measurements, the decrease in structural stiffness for the fatigue test is obtained and described by a logarithmic law. The residual strength and stiffness in the quasi-static tensile test gives insight into how pre-damaged structural parts can be used for limited durations.
