Original Kurzfassung:
Classical Yang-Mills theory is of great importance to high energy physics. For example, solutions of the Yang-Mills equations are used to model the earliest stages of heavy ion collisions, such as the experiments carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) or the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC), and the electroweak
phase transition in the early universe. In practice, it is often not possible to nd exact solutions due to the non-linear nature of the Yang-Mills equations. Numerical methods are needed to obtain approximations of the solutions. In the first part of this seminar I will discuss the basics of (classical) Yang-Mills theory and interesting properties such as gauge invariance and the existence of constraints. In the second part I will derive a few important results of lattice gauge theory, which is a power-ful numerical description of Yang-Mills theory discretized on a space-time lattice.
Finally, in the third part, I will demonstrate how these equations are used to simulate the so-called "Glasma", which is a state of matter produced in the collisions of high energy heavy ions.
The seminar series provides an introduction to the speakers PhD thesis prepared at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at TU Wien.
