Circular innovation addresses new product and service development for the circular economy. As a popular product design concept, cradle-to-cradle advances circular innovation by promoting healthy materials for closed biological and technical loops. Conducting a longitudinal in-depth case study on a cradle-to-cradle pioneer company in the consumables industry, we apply promotor network theory (Fichter 2009) to provide an actor focused analysis of a circular innovation process. We elaborate on promotor network theory by unearthing the mechanisms unfolding between the involved network actors at the level of the focal company, value chain partners, and intermediaries. Internal learning, knowledge sharing, trusteeing, persuading, explaining & pushing, and certifying explain how compa-nies collaborate in this innovation network to overcome barriers and develop circular products.
