Using data from multiple seasons of top-level nordic combined competitions (FIS World Cup), we investigate the causal effect of intermediate ranking and performance gaps on subsequent performance. We use randomly assigned wind conditions as an instrument to avoid selection and endogeneity bias. Preliminary results provide evidence for negative effect of a higher performance gap in intermediate rankings on performance in the second stage. Our analysis confirms a non-linear relationship over the whole intermediate ranking distribution.
