Original Kurzfassung:
Simulation of fluid-particle systems are of high interest in both science and engineering. In some cases, resolved simulation of such systems is needed or desirable. For such problems, a coupling between the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and the discrete element method (DEM) has been shown to be an efficient approach. For both simulation methods, well-established open-source codes exist: LIGGGHTS for the DEM, and Palabos for the LBM. We have created LBDEMcoupling, a connection between those two platforms. LBDEMcoupling is released under a free license and allows to make use of the many features implemented both in LIGGGHTS and Palabos. We present a validation case of a settling sphere in fluid, in which results obtained with LBDEMcoupling are compared to measurements. Further, parallel performance is discussed, where we find excellent scaling for up to 256 cores. Finally, we give an outlook on first applications: the study of sedimentation onset in open channel flow, and investigations of suspensions in narrow channels.
