"A new one is cheaper". The Organization of Repair

We analyse the repair?industry for consumer goods in Middle?Europe and interpret its
state using the concept of identity field. We find that identity of the present repair field is
represented through two core attributes: First, to be a social initiative and, second, to be
at the border of capitalism, being simultaneously inside and outside of the traditional
capitalistic model. A key role of communicating this identy play products as
communication devices and the café metaphor, as it is expressed through the now
widespread establishment of ?repair cafés?. We take this as a basis for the indroduction
of an extended expression of this identity as the ?Viennese Café? which traditionally
acted as a market place of ideas, information, creativity and a sense of community which
is inclusive over the whole range of society.
