Literature explores the role of paradoxical leadership as a key factor in an organization?s ability to deal with contradictory demands, tensions and paradoxes. Although scholars acknowledge the pivotal role of leaders in managing paradoxes, little attempt has been made to systematically integrate the current body of knowledge from a leadership perspective. In order to provide an evidence base as a source of in-depth information for managers, policy-makers and researchers, I conducted a systematic literature review that synthesizes theoretical and empirical studies on paradox, tensions and leadership. The integrated model of paradoxical leadership indicates that cognitive, behavioral and emotional complexity set the stage for dynamic shifting between differentiation and integration tactics. Supporting both the distinct value of the elements but also their interrelationship enables leaders to engage in practices that allow the establishment of a both/and perspective throughout the organization. Adopting a both/and perspective helps practitioners to overcome stuckness, especially in situations of ambiguity and complexity.
