Building on Derrida?s Logic of the Supplement this paper contributes to conceptualizing institutional complexity by demonstrating that a single institutional logic is conceptually and empirically impossible: instead, institutional logics appear as multitudes (i.e. as pairs, at the least) and each logic is contaminated with at least one other logic (i.e. it cannot be pure or internally consistent). We propose a conceptualization of interdependent institutional logics as nested dialectics and demonstrate its accuracy and fruitfulness by exploring the interplay between market and professional logic as exemplified in the history of US accounting and artistic interventions in businesses.
