Original Kurzfassung:
Development is in the state of upheaval. The old "industrialized countries", i.e. the Centers of the capitalist world system (Western Europe, USA, Japan) find themselves in a persistent crisis. The rise of the so-called emerging economies, i.e. the BRICS countries, has redrawn the geopolitical map and led to the transnational discourse of a new global middle class. But there is no overall or sustainable trend towards convergence. Some of the BRICS are due for a severe slowdown and, even worse, poor countries are lagging behind since decades. The input builds on theories of uneven and combined development and shows that development in the capitalist world system hinges on unevenness with temporal and spatial dimensions. The lecture is part of the Workshop 6 "Buen Vivir and the challenge of socio-ecological Transformation".
