Original Kurzfassung:
A job applicant is temporarily "betwixt and between", not yet, but with some likelihood inside the organization in the future. The job interview is used for this study as a temporal and liminal situation for which status behavior have been proposed to play an increased role. The study is the first to explicitly test the impact of such behaviors in a described organizational context. With a vignette-based laboratory experiment hypotheses are tested in regard to the impact of a specific type of status behavior (powerful versus powerless language) and the effect of attribution of status based on this behavior on the decision between applicants. These relationships are supported through the experiment. Both manipulated status behavior and attribution of status based on behavior have a significant impact on the selection of job applications. Further, the effect of attributed status interacts with the degree of formalization in the organization. Limitations and implications are discussed.
