Many European countries introduced school inspections as a major mechanism to assure and promote school quality (Eurydice, 2004). Ehren et al., (2013) have reconstructed the processes by which inspection systems aim to achieve these quality goals. The proposed paper searches for those elements that are driving processes of improvement in the context of inspections. Accountability pressure seems to be crucial for understanding the operation of inspection systems (van Bruggen, 2010). Other inspection systems work on the assumption that insight of schools into the goals, processes, and results of inspections is an essential impulse for improvement (Böttger-Beer & Koch, 2008).
In our presentation we will explore the role of pressure and insight for processes of school inspection using online survey data from school principals in primary and secondary education. First results indicate that pressure and insight are alternative attitudes about how to deal with the instruments and data provided by school inspections.
