In the ongoing investigation the anionic polymerization of glass fiber reinforced polyamide 6 composite is investigated. The material has a low viscosity compared to conventional resin fluids before polymerization. The impact of the change of this and similar material properties can be analyzed and optimized by Computational Fluid Dynamics. In the field of LCM one specific commercial tool PAM-RTM (ESI GROUP) has been used intensively for these investigations.
In this work, the capability of OpenFOAM ® to produce results of equal quality within the same or even shorter calculation time as PAM-RTM is shown. Also comparisons with experimental results are
carried out (see figure 1) in order to show the physical correctness of the simulation results in OpenFOAM®. Here, it is shown that errors are within 7.5% for different volume flux rates as well as
different calculation grid sizes.
These results give a promising prediction that in future it will be possible to depict the whole production chain (plastification, mixing of components, filling and polymerization) within a single
simulation in the OpenFOAM® framework. This will allow OpenFOAM ® to be used for optimization purposes before the actual establishment of the process in the industry on the one hand, but also to be
used for fast decisions concerning e.g. geometric changes or other process parameters on site in the factory during production on the other hand. This way the utilization of OpenFOAM ® for academic
and engineering problem settings can be widened to be one intrinsic part of the actual composite material production.
