Original Kurzfassung:
Steering a vehicle has become a complex adaptation task involving plenty of interactions between driver, car, and the diverse assistance systems. Latest advancements in ICT, such as everywhere Internet access or cloud computing, challenges vehicular UIs even more, as new, feature-rich applications are now available in the car. Unfortunately, traditional button/knob based interaction would not be flexible enough to support all the functionality a driver may want to use in future. To address this issue we are proposing to use gesture controlled interfaces to allow the driver to control applications in his/her preferred way. In this work, we are focusing on the problem of interface prototyping/design as most of the existing solutions are specified for utilization outside the car domain and often suffer from poor usability. A specific objective of this work is to assess usability, experience and achievable recognition rate of the prototyped interface. Therefore an evaluation with a group of users was conducted; quantitative results as well as verbal feedback gave us interesting insights for future work.
