Electromagnetic and Thermal Design of Electric Motors ? fast and accurate
Sprache des Titels:

Original Kurzfassung:
There is currently an increasing demand for higher powered, smaller, lighter and more efficient electric motors and generators. In view of this, the cooling system design and the development of reliable thermal models that can be used to model the heat transfer in the electrical machine are becoming more important. The use of thermal
models allows designers and users to investigate and optimize new cooling strategies in order to be certain that their solution will not suffer from thermal problems. The use of analytical thermal methods to model motors and generators is also a key issue at present due to the growing market for green energy and electric applications such as hybrid and electric vehicles. Often, such devices operate with long and complex duty cycle loads that are almost impossible to model within a reasonable calculation time using numerical methods. Numerical methods are more effective in the calibration of the more complex cooling paths in the cooling circuit modelled in the analytical model. Different methods available for modelling heat transfer and flow in electric machines will be explained ? in an language understandable for the electrical engineer. Benefits and limitations of the different cooling types will be highlighted. The need for thermal analysis to optimize the design ? also
electromagnetically ? will be depicted, as well as to maximize efficiency and/or motor life, to minimize weight or ensure a motor is sized correctly for its intended load duty. Also, the different analytical and numerical methods used in this analysis will be compared, details of the key issues underlined. Finally, an overview on how thermal analysis has been used to optimize several electric machine designs for automotive, aerospace and industrial applications from real project work will be shown.
