In a 1938 text, Otto Neurath ascribes to scientific imagination a role similar to that ascribed to logic by the Vienna Circle: imagination helps to criticize residual metaphysical ideas in the sciences, in an effort to improve the clarity and objectivity of our epistemic practices. This talk will discuss Neurath's account and examples that refer to science fiction and to the utopian tradition.
