Prof. Friedel Gerfers, Technische Universität Berlin, Berlin, Germany - Data Converters are an essential building block in wireless receivers impacting the overall signal-to-noise ratio and energy-efficiency. In the first part of this talk, we analyse different non-linearity sources within continuous-time (CT) sigma-delta modulators (SDMs) and propose various calibration schemes to obtain SFDR levels of beyond 15bit in turn relaxing the stringent design specifications (and therewith lowing the overall power consumption) of the SDM building blocks. Measurement results confirm the effectiveness of the suggested techniques.
In the second part of this talk, we introduce a novel receiver architecture performing active beamforming (BF) when using multiple antennas. The proposed BF architecture eliminates the need for highly linear (true delay) building blocks, by taking advantage of the ?sampled-beamforming concept.? We present besides the novel architecture an implementation example operating at 12GS/s with corresponding simulation results.
