A decisive advantage of variable flux permanent
magnet machines is their ability to control the rotor flux linkage.
The method by which a flux linkage variation is achieved varies
between different topologies, which significantly influences the
machine?s characteristics. This paper selects two variable flux
machine topologies for comparison to a conventional internal
permanent magnet machine. An evaluation method is presented
to assess the VFMs for different flux linkage levels, and all
three machines are optimized for a specific driving cycle. A
design is chosen from the optimization results for all topologies,
and a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative comparison is
conducted on the machines.
