Original Kurzfassung:
TMAH proved to be a more effective swelling agent of cellulose than NaOH. The difference between their swelling effect starts to be significant about 2 mol/l concentration. Similar effectiveness was observed both at the cell.I/ cell.II transiton and the accessibilty characterized by iodine sorption and water retention.
The results can be assigned to the molecular size and non-polar part of the TMAH molecule, which might be able to penetrate also into the non-polar sheets between the cellulose chains.
Dyeing properties of cellulose was improved by TMAH in a larger extent than by NaOH.
