Carbon fiber sheet molding compounds (CF-SMC) are highly-filled molding compounds with excellent mechanical performance and good manufacturability. This work investigates the applicability of primary and recycled CF-SMCs in lightweight components. Model components of various material configurations are compression molded and structural tests are conducted under 4-point bending loading conditions. Three primary materials with different matrix systems are compared in a benchmark study with a standard glass fiber sheet molding compound. A distinct pseudo-ductile deformation behavior with high apparent fracture toughness and energy absorbing capacity is revealed by the component tests. It is demonstrated that a hybrid mix of primary and recycled materials with various weight fractions can improve manufacturability without impacting structural performance. Discontinuous/continuous hybrids improve component stiffness and strength and lead to a reduction of variability. The findings show the potential to use CF-SMCs in high-volume lightweight applications.
