The main topic of this Ph.D. thesis is the design and evaluation of a double-stator linear induction machine prototype with a skewed cage mover. The stator windings are distributed to two stators for improved cooling of the stator coils and, moreover, the heavy back iron in the flux path can be omitted. The cage mover is a lightweight aluminum plate with arrow-shaped slots, which are filled with soft magnetic composite material, allowing more flux to penetrate the mover while simultaneously reducing eddy currents. It is located at an unstable rest position between the stators because of high attraction forces between the stators and the mover. This prototype is new compared to linear induction machines in industry, which mainly use less efficient reaction plates (e.g. aluminum or copper) without stability issues because they exhibit almost no reluctance force due to the low permeability of the mover material.
