Foreseeing a component based automation system architecture in the future, AutomationML consortium is developing a meta-model named AMLComponentMetamodel. The AMLComponentMetamodel defines different entities for modeling mechatronic aspects of an automation component in AutomationML. However, providing a methodology for using AMLComponentMetamodel for component oriented automation system engineering is beyond the scope of the AMLComponentMetamodel. We propose a novel methodology and modeling means for planning and engineering component based automation systems in AutomationML. A tool implementation demonstrate the use case of the presented methodology and modeling means. The discussion shows that our approach brings substantial improvement to the state of the art engineering process and simplifies the component based automation system engineering.
