Original Kurzfassung:
Lustrous black needle shaped single crystals of NaCuHf2Se5 were obtained by reacting Na2Se with the corresponding elemental components at 1000 °C. NaCuHf2Se5 is orthorhombic, oC36, space group Cmcm, Z=4 with a=3.7816(3), b=13.566(4), c=16.207(3) Å. The crystal structure was determined from diffractometer data and refined to a conventional R of 0.034 (420 Fo's, 32 variables). The crystal structure is of a new type. It contains complex anionic layers, 2-[CuHf2Se5]-, running parallel (010) and separated by Na+-cations which are in a bicapped trigonal prismatic chalcogen coordination. The layers are based on a corrugated network of edge- and corner-sharing HfSe6 octahedra forming tetrahedral niches which host the copper atoms. Average bond lengths are 2.669 Å for Hf---Se and 2.429 Å for Cu---Se, respectively. NaCuHf2Se5 belongs to the series A2Cu2TIVn+1Q2n+4 (T=IVa metal, Q=chalcogen). Closely related lower members of this series are represented by the KCuZrS3 and Tl2Cu2Hf3Se8 structure types. The 2-[CuHf2Se5]- layers are isostructural and isoelectronic with the neutral layers of Ta2NiS5.
