An ultra-low power ASK demodulator is presented for an RFID tag operating in the UHF 900 MHz band with a wide dynamic range of input signal levels from -24 dBm, -14 dBm to +8 dBm. The demodulator is capable to handle a modulation index as low as 8% and a pulse width for data encoding in the modulating signal as short as 10% of the baseband symbol period. The demodulator achieves a DC current consumption below 300 nA at voltage level of - 14 dBm and data rates from 30 kbps to 80 kbps. The demodulator includes a PIE decoder for clock and data extraction and is designed with 180 nm CMOS TSMC technology and operates at 1 V supply.
