Red Light Triggered Photoreduction Reactions on a Nucleic Acid Template.

We tested complexes of pyropheophorbide a with In3+ and Sn4+ as photocatalysts for reduction of organic substrates, including black hole quencher 2 (BHQ2, a representative azo dye), fluorescein and 3-azido-7-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)coumarin (a representative arylazide), in aqueous solution buffered at pH 7 upon irradiation with red light. Both complexes were found to be similarly active as photocatalyst. The best reactivity among tested substrates was observed for the azo dye. Using the best combination of a catalyst (In(pyropheophorbide a)Cl) and a substrate (BHQ2) we designed the reactants for the nucleic acid templated photoreduction and confirmed experimentally that the latter reaction is feasible.
