Validating large eddie simulations of two fluid flows via time resolved PIV

The process chain in steel production can be generally described as a sequence of two fluid systems ? the liquid steel always comes along with a liquid slag layer. Due to the large difference in density the two liquids usually stay separated. However, triggered by turbulent flow conditions or locally increased shear forces the lighter liquid can be entrained into the heavier one. In the case of steel production this would cause local impurities and inclusions in the final product and must be avoided. Thus, the modelling of slag entrainment mechanisms via CFD is of high interest in industry. In this work the turbulence near the liquid- liquid-gas interfaces of an incompressible interfacial flow is investigated numerically and experimentally to improve the modelling of slag entrainment in steel industry.
