The main structural feature of NH4CuMoS4 are linear 1-oo-[CuMoS4]-chains of edge sharing suphur tetrahedra alternatingly centered by the monovalent and the hexavalent metal. Similar but homonuclear chains are also observed in the extended group of fibrous thioferrates. In the course of this study which was stimulated by the structural relations between NH4CuMoS4 and the thioferrates of Ba(2+) and Sr(2+), a number of new quaternary suphides AM(I)T(IV)S4 (A=NH4,K; M=Cu,Ag; T=Mo,W) could be prepared and structurally characterized.
