Studies which investigate the effects of various tasks on the arousal state of a person do normally not consider the presence of others as possible influence for measured effects. This point of criticism is formulated as the research question in this thesis: "How does the
mere presence of another person in the same room trigger changes in the cardiovascular system?". A study is conducted where changes in ECG recordings are analysed, when a person is alone compared to being in company. The results showed that the hypothesis regarding detectability of the presence of another person is not supported. The assumption that the heart rates become more similar the longer the persons are together, is also not supported by the collected data. The findings of this thesis reveal the need for fundamental research in the domain of how the mere presence triggers effects on the cardiovascular system. Furthermore an initial design for an experiment to validate such interrogation is proposed.
