This paper compares aspects of leadership, in particular autocratic vs. participative leadership styles, in Poland and Austria. It draws on existing empirical studies and contrasts these findings with the results of a recent international study, the GLOBE project. The comparison shows that there seems to be some change under way in Polish leadership styles. In addition, the results suggest that (1) power distance is a more complex phenomenon than suggested, and (2) future studies on leadership should incorporate the power bases underlying leadership.
