Amongst the number of processes, involved in steel production, the iron ore reduction within the blast furnace is a very central one. The efficiency of this reaction heavily depends on the size and shape of the raceway, formed by the hot blast in the vicinity of the tuyeres. With the aid of the Open Source coupled CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and DEM (Discrete Element Method) software package CFDEMcoupling the raceway formation is investigated.
In a detailed experimental study the impact of different tuyere diameters, particle diameters and blast velocities on to the raceway size is investigated. Furthermore the results obtained by numerical simulations are compared to the experimental data. For covering a wide parameter range, materials differing in grain size and density were used. Scaling arguments allow the extension of the presented workflow to the application to industrial scale furnaces.
