The Role of a Technology Integrator in a successful Publicly Funded Research Network

The R&D Management Conference 2013
The objective of this case study is to analyze a successful publicly funded research network
(ACCM - Austrian Center of Competence in Mechatronics). In particular, the importance of a
technology integrator (institution as an element of the network) for the effective transfer of
basic research results into industrial practice in this network is examined.
The results show that the technology integrator (Linz Center of Mechatronics - LCM) has a
particularly important role in the technology transfer. LCM is constituted as an applied
research institution and has an integration position between science and industry. A main
function of LCM is to realize prototypes building on basic research results, which have to
fulfill industrial demands. In this respect, the role of LCM goes far beyond the known
functions of a Technology Transfer Office (TTO). LCM does not only organize the transfer,
but also facilitates the integration of the basic research results into industrial practice (e.g. by
applied research, prototypes,?). LCM acts as technology integrator.
