Original Kurzfassung:
In continuous casting of steel, mainly curved strand machines are used. The formation of an inclusion band due to the strand curvature is a well known and apparently inherent side-effect of the bending-type casting machines. The minimisation of this effect is an important task in order to improve the cleanliness of the produced steel. In this publication, a model of the inclusion band formation will be presented. The model predicts the location of the inclusion band within the slab cross section as well as the inclusion concentration distribution. The influence of process parameters like casting speed and slab dimensions, the influence of geometrical machine parameters like curvature radius and vertical length as well as the influence of the liquid steel flow profile inside the strand are considered. With theses considerations, optimisations of existing and planned casting machines are possible with respect to inclusion concentration minimisation.
