We will present a spectrum of different approaches for co-operations between universities and industrial partners which lead to a sound and up-to-date qualification of technicians. The paper introduces the characteristics of the approaches by means of two case studies where one is on a national scale and a second one is an international project which has been funded by the European Union to support training of technicians in the field of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) in the Czech Republic. Both case studies are performed on the Austrian site by the Research Institute of Applied Knowledge Processing (FAW) which has been founded as a national nucleus research institution for research and technology dissemination in
Austria and Middle/East Europe.
