The application of in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to the investigation of the properties of conductive polymers and to the study of their electrochemical reaction processes is described. Two different experimental methods, external reflection absorption spectroscopy and internal reflection spectroscopy, are discussed. Results of the study of electronic effects, absorption band intensity enhancement, structural changes of the polymer chain, and changes in the content of counter-ions in the polymer matrix are presented.
